A follow-up to her debut studio albumΒ SawayamaΒ (2020),Β Hold the GirlΒ is the result of the singer channeling the trauma she experienced as a teenager, after beginning a "more intense and specialized therapy." The title refers to Sawayama's attempts to understand the person she was younger, especially as a child. She came up with this title following a therapy session in late 2020.
